A bit awkward, but below is the content of our previous discussion forum which was hacked. Perhaps an Ctrl-F search can point you to the desired information.

"2","ef62a99cd0","David Hemmings","Sorry to hear about the death of actor David Hemmings. In 1977 he produced and appeared in a film called 'The Disappearance'. and Robert Farnon composed the score. Hemmings obviously recognised talent!"

Riddle's 'Sea of Dreams' LP and 'Love Tide' LP together on a two

for one CD to be released on 15 March.

The catalogue number is 5970532 and the title of the CD naturally

is ""Sea of Dreams/Love Tide"".

The CD will be available from all the usual sources eg HMV etc

I have found out that the German record company MPS (part of

Universal) is reissuing two of its Nelson Riddle LPs on separate CDs

on 29 March 2004.

The LPs being reissued on CD are'Communication' (tracks are: My Life / Uptown Dance / Time And Space / Romantic Places / Volcano's Daughter / Rachel / Born Happy / A Night Of Love / Dedication / Greenwich Villa) and 'Changing Colors' (tracks are: My Life / My Sweet Love / Sao Paulo / Close To You / My One And Only Love / Lamento / When the World Was Young / Naomi / Just A Little Lovin' / Changing Colors).

The catalogue number for the Communication CD is

602498147955 and the catalogue number for the Changing Colors CD is

602498147948

I have found a few online CD retailers that are already listing them:

www.cybercd.de

www.amazon.de

www.hmv.co.jp

I expect other online CD retailers will list these CDs in due course

when the word gets out about their release at the end of March.

The original LPs are rare. Second hand copies do crop up on the

internet but usually for crazy amounts of money. MPS did release the two albums on a double CD called ""The Silver Collection"" way back in 1997. This double CD set has been deleted now for many years and is very difficult to find on the Web. It's good to see these two superb highly sought after LPs finally rereleased in the CD format. :?"

"4","c0336608d3","Light Music on BBC Radio 2","British members of The Robert Farnon Society may be aware of forthcoming changes at the top of BBC Radio 2. In recent years this network has drastically reduced the amount of quality vocal and orchestral 'popular' music broadcast during daylight hours, and it is to be hoped that this regrettable trend can be reversed. There is no national radio station in Britain which can be relied upon to broadcast regularly the kind of popular music enjoyed by the majority of the population aged 50 and over. You are urged to make your views known to the BBC (and any other broadcasters you consider appropriate). It does seem that the 'silent majority' need to stop being silent, because by doing so their interests are being ignored."

"5","25a8c0f335","Charles Williams","Although I regard Robert Farnon as the world's greatest exponent of light music, I have a tremendous regard for the music of the late Charles Williams.

I have just purchased the latest CD by the BBC Concert Orchestra of Mr. Williams' work and have certainly not been disappointed.

The 24 tracks provide a broad cross-section of his style from the frivolous to the dramatic.

This compilation would make an ideal Christmas gift if there's a light music ""tragic""(like me) among your circle.

Incidentally, one thinks of Charles Williams every time the ABC Radio news comes on air here in Australia. His ""Majestic Fanfare"" has been the signature tune (in various forms) since about 1950.

And congratulations to all concerned with the new-look Discussion Forum. I hope it will be well used.

Best wishes to all members for 2004.

Can anyone confirm this? - I know it has just recently been released on a CD of Boosey and Hawkes Libary Music:

It's the first file at the top of the page (real file not .wav file)

Many Thanks,

DESIRE. PASSION. SCANDAL.

Based on Colleen McCullough’s best-selling novel, this romantic saga spans fifty years and three generations. Winner of 5 Emmy Awards, The Thorn Birds features a star-studded cast. Even after 20 years it remains the second highest-rated miniseries in television history.

In the rugged Australian Outback, three generations of Clearys live through joy sadness, bitter defeat and magnificent triumph – driven by their dreams, sustained by remarkable strength of character … and torn by dark passions, violence and a scandalous family legacy of forbidden love. Richard Chamberlain played the tortured priest Ralph de Bricassart and Rachel Ward was Meggie Clearly, the girl whose heart he broke, time and time again.

In addition to its own legendary status, The Thorn Birds featured what is inarguably one of the greatest and most-loved scores ever penned by the incomparable Henry Mancini. Amazingly, despite the extraordinary success of the mini-series, Mancini’s fame and a huge public outcry for the music’s release, no soundtrack album was ever forthcoming. Finally, in honor of what would have been Henry Mancini’s 80th birthday (April 16, 2004), and to coincide with the US Postal Service’s issue of a Henry Mancini stamp, we are thrilled to offer this spectacular score as a deluxe 2 CD set. Featuring the enormously famous themes from the 10-hour production, this is classic romance at its finest. As a score every bit as beautiful, romantic and famous as Somewhere In Time, Out of Africa or Doctor Zhivago, the release of The Thorn Birds is a major recording event not to be missed by anyone who saw the miniseries, still remembers Mancini’s enchanting melodies or simply loves beautiful music. Further raising current awareness of the television classic, The Thorn Birds has also just made its DVD debut to a vast and awaiting fan base.

At long last, this Mancini masterpiece comes to CD as a lavish two disc set!

It appears the ""....still sailing by"" CD originally came out in 2000, however this is the first time I have heard of it.

For those that do not know, Mozart Edition is a Mood Music/Production Music Publisher that was recently bought by Heinz Herschmann of Apollo Sound fame (www.apollosound.co.uk). Apollo Sound are famous for releasing a series of Test Card Music CDs.

It would appear that Mr Herschmann has relaunched the Mozart Edition website. I am not sure whether he is selling off old stock or whether these are new pressings but it is interesting to note that the much sought after, long deleted, Mozart Edition compilation CDs MECD 1001, MECD 1003 and MECD 105 are also availabe to buy at £12 each.

Mr Herschmann is selling these CDs to the public. You can order directly from the www.editionuk.co.uk website.

Also available to buy for Mood Music collectors is a long list of Mozart Edition LPs. However they are expensive at £12 each so probably for mood music fans/collectors only!"

All Strings and Fancy Free

SIDNEY TORCH & his Orchestra

(CD AJA5540)

British-born of Russian parents, Sidney Torch (1908-1990) was an enormously influential figure in Light Music of the 40s and 50s, and he follows on from such as Stanley Black, Percy Faith, André Konstelanetz, Leroy Anderson, Mantovani, Robert Farnon, Melachrino and Peter Yorke in Living Era’s acclaimed Light Music catalogue. Remarkably, although best remembered nowadays as a conductor and composer, Sidney Torch was also a superstar of the cinema organ before the war.

All Strings And Fancy Free (the title of a delightful Torch original) presents the sort of melodious fare that Sidney Torch used to provide for listeners to his countless radio broadcasts, most notably of Friday Night Is Music Night, an enduring institution from the 50s. The main billing goes to the maestro’s own compositions, such as On A Spring Note, Radio Romantic, Meandering, London Playhouse, Blue Night, Amore Mio, Fandango and Shooting Star. Also featured are many scintillating Torch arrangements, among them Coronation Scot, Destiny Waltz and Pan American Fantasy.

Despite his popularity there is next to nothing of Sidney Torch currently available, so this generously filled CD should find a warm welcome from Light Music enthusiasts.

Called ""Quiet on the Set:James Galway at the Movies"", the CD was released by BMG Red Seal in the UK on 9 February 2004. Catalogue number 82876579102. Total playing time is just over 45 minutes. There are 13 tracks listed below including James Horner's Braveheart, Ennio Morricone's The Mission and Andrea Morricone's Cinema Paradiso, Rachel Portman's Emma, John William's Far and Away, Alan Silvestri's Forrest Gump, Thomas Newman's The Horse Whisperer and Luis Bacalov's Il Postino.

This is actually Galway's second collection of themes and songs from popular films.

The CD retails in the UK for about £15.99.

All thirteen tracks are beautiful melodies expertly played by James Galway on his flute and backed by what the CD cover says is the ""London Mozart Players"" - which to my ears sounds like a full string orchestra.

Highly recommended.

This book was originally published in the USA back in I believe 1994 and also published in the UK in 1995.

The book has been revised and expanded. The revised version of the book was published in the USA on 26 January 2004 by the University of Michigan Press.

Although I haven't seen the revised version, the first edition is an excellent overview of the history of easy listening, mood music, light music and I recommend it to anyone interested in this type of music. Don't let the title of ""Elevator music"" put you off, this is a very interesting, easy to read book. According to Amazon, there are 329 pages (first edition had 280 pages). Obviously in a book of 329 pages, you cannot expect an indepth look at the history of this genre of music (you would need at least a thousand pages or more) but as an overview, it is highly recommended.

The book is available from Amazon.com for US$13.27. For you information, the publisher's book description is as follows:

Elevator Music

A Surreal History of Muzak, Easy-Listening, and Other Moodsong; Revised and Expanded Edition

Joseph Lanza

5-1/2 x 8-1/4. 12 photographs.

Paper 0-472-08942-0 $18.95T

Noted music historian Joseph Lanza seriously appraises an American musical tradition.

For a sound intended to be comforting, unobtrusive, and inoffensive, ""elevator music"" --i.e., easy listening, mood music, ""Beautiful Music,"" and ""Music by Muzak®"" --has ignited strong and often heated opinions.

With an arsenal of historical anecdotes and facts, Joseph Lanza sings seriously, with healthy doses of humor and wit, the praises of this misunderstood musical genre. Lanza traces mood music's mystifying presence from the mind-altering sirens who lured Odysseus to the harp David played to soothe King Saul, but the tale gets more intriguing in the early twentieth century, with Erik Satie's ""furniture music"" experiments, the birth of the Muzak® Corporation, and various science fiction stories that featured mood music as a futuristic staple.

Lanza also chronicles the parallel development of the ""easy listening"" instrumental, discussing such ""mood maestros"" as Ray Conniff, Percy Faith, Andre Kostelanetz, and Mantovani. More recent ""ambient"" soundscapers like Brian Eno and practitioners of what some still call New Age also enter the picture. Along the way, Lanza addresses mood music's social and even governmental uses, raising questions about music's role in modern life while challenging aesthetic assumptions.

This revised and expanded edition delves deeper into the surreal phenomenon of ""metarock"" --the art of reinterpreting rock songs into dreamlike, string-laden, easy-listening alternatives. The author also adds an afterword about some of the actual musicians who arranged and conducted Muzak® sessions --respected names like Nelson Riddle.

Elevator Music confronts the criticisms of elites who say that elevator music is ""dehumanizing"" or less than music. These reactions, Lanza argues, are based more on cultural prejudices than honest musical appraisal. In a current climate where the noises are louder, and the background beats are ever more aggressive, this history of music intended as a pleasing background makes for a captivating read.

Joseph Lanza is currently writing an impressionistic history of romantic pop ballads. He has served as an independent consultant for Time Life Music and was executive producer for the two-disc collection Music for TV Dinners (Caroline Records). His most recent book is about the legendary crooner Russ Columbo"

"37","192b9ff183","The OTHER "Forgotten Dreams", we think.","We think there is a ""Forgotten Dreams"" that is not Leroy Anderson's, and is not any of the newer post-1980 songs of the same name. Google helped me find your site, but did not help me find this song.

My wife recently heard it played on TV, and saw it on the sheet music the piano player was using. She thinks it was from the 50's, it was played on the American Airlines ""Music 'til Dawn"" (As for me, I don't remember it).

But, since I cannot attach sheet music here, I'll do my best to write out the melody (it's an instrumental -- and much of our memory is poor about this).

All the notes are below HighC, but the C above middle is designated as +C, and the F above is designated +F. The metre is straight 4/4 time.

Thus, this should be playable on the piano or elsewhere.

Here is our best guess:

First Line:

&, 1 & 2 &, 3 & 4 &, 1 & 2 &, 3 (& 4)

C, +C C D C, +C C D C, +C C E G, F - -

Second line: Repeat first line (approximately)

&, 1 & 2 &, 3 & 4 &, 1 & 2 &, 3 (& 4)

C, +C C D C, +C C D C, +C C E G, F - -

Third line: repeat same line using F as base note:

&, 1 & 2 &, 3 & 4 &, 1 & 2 &, 3 (& 4)

F, +F F G F, +F F G F, +F F A? +C?, Bb? - -

Last line: repeat patternuntil the end

&, 1 & 2 &, 3 & 4 &, 1 & 2 &, 3 (& 4)

C, +C C D C, +C C D C, G F A +C +F - - -

(we think - it gets fuzzy at the end.)

Can you help us figure out what this is?

It is possible that the man was playing a song OTHER than the sheet music on the piano (which said ""Forgotten Dreams"")

Good luck! If anybody figures this out they ought to win themselves a million pounds or dollars somewhere!

Larry Gott"

"48","788e4c1bd8","Out of Copyright - The Copyright Timebomb","""Music Week"" which is a long established weekly trade magazine for the UK music industry has recently launched a campaign to get the current term of copyright of 50 years extended. Within Europe, the term of protection for sound recordings is 50 years after initial release. This term compares to 70 years in Australia, Brazil, Chile, Peru and Turkey and 95 years in the USA (the USA's 95 years is the most generous of a range of variations worldwide). Europe's 50 year term was established on a pan-European basis in 1993.

The music industry in the UK are starting to panic because on 1 January next year, the first Elvis Presley recordings begin to move out of copyright and into the public domain. Other 50s classics from artists such as Bill Haley and Ray Charles will also fall into public domain.

Personally, I think that 50 years is more than enough. Record companies are just being greedy by wanting the 50 years extended. Let's face it, most of the large record companies are just not interested in releasing our kind of music as there is not enough profit for them to make it worthwhile. Extending the 50 years term will hit companies like Prism Leisure, Naxos and Guild (ie the new series of Light Music CDs). I sincerely hope the 50 years copyright term is not extended otherwise I fear I will not be able to live long enough to see some of my favourite light/popular orchestral music released on CD.

Article below taken from Music Week magazine:

""From January 1, 2005, classic recordings from artists such as Elvis Presley, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra will fall out of UK copyright.

The music industry is preparing for a year-long campaign to extend the term of copyright on sound recordings from 50 years across Europe.

Artists, labels, managers and industry associations are adding their voices to a growing lobby which is calling for a change to prevent some of the treasures of rock’n’roll moving into the public domain over the next few years.

The momentum is building in favour of a change in the European law. Last week, a coalition of artists revealed details of a petition, co-ordinated with the IFPI, to bring pressure in Brussels over the issue. The move came as representatives from Aim and EMI met to discuss the issue and the pan-industry Music Business Forum agreed to talk about its position for the first time.

Just a week before, BPI executive chairman Peter Jamieson used his AGM speech to call for the industry to step up its campaign within the European Commission. And, a fortnight before that, artist Mick Hucknall called for an extension at Aim’s AGM.

The process of pushing for change has quietly been underway for more than a year. The IFPI put in a formal request to the European Commission in June last year, asking for the term of copyright to be extended as part of the EC’s review of a series of copyright-related directives dating from the mid- to early-Nineties. The directives - covering Rental, Term Of Protection, Cable & Satellite, Database and Software - all include clauses recommending a review to ensure they are keeping up with technological advances.

Since then, the Commission has been working on the review; a staff working paper has since emerged, but, while it raises the issue, it does not commit the EC to a particular position.

While many suggest that the current wave of concern is overdue, it is not too late, by any means. With the European Parliament heading into recess through August, little significant is likely to happen until the new session begins in September. If the Commission submits a report this autumn, a full directive could be in place by next summer.

It could take until 2007 for any changes to come into force through Europe. This, stresses IFPI European regional director Frances Moore, leaves a 12-month window of opportunity for interested parties to ensure their voices are heard on the matter.

And, even though copyrights such as Elvis Presley’s That’s All Right and others would, in theory, have been public domain for two years by then, there are precedents for such works to come back into copyright. ""The problem is that during the couple of years they go out of copyright they can be exploited in ways that the artist might not like,"" says Moore.

How far back into history public domain recordings might be returned to copyright is unclear, but it would probably go back ""a few years"", says one observer.

There is little doubt that securing an extension will not come easy. As one Brussels source concedes, ""It will be an uphill struggle.""

Because of the UK’s traditional position as one of the key suppliers of repertoire for the world market - and rivalled only by the US as a source for the rock’n’roll industry’s most historic recordings - this market is likely to be the most strenuous advocates for an extension of term.

Peter Jamieson says, ""A lot of the smaller markets don’t have the same tradition in indigenous repertoire and will be less inclined to push for a change in the law.""

Although the decision will be taken in Brussels, the views of the EU members - including those of the UK Government - will be crucial. Past experience indicates that the Commission will be inclined towards retaining the status quo, unless the member states make a case for a change, says Moore.

The campaign to remove or lower the rate of VAT on music started with just France raising the issue and has snowballed to encompass the feelings of far wider support, she says. In turn, the recent enforcement directive and copyright directive were both published with wording which initially raised serious concerns, but which evolved through the lobbying process.

Early signs indicate that there is some interest in making a change; support has already been voiced for such a move by France, Portugal, Denmark, Netherlands and Belgium.

Jamieson says, ""It is an EU issue, not a UK in isolation issue, but we have to make sure that all the UK MEPs and UK MPS are abreast of the issue. I think it is a no-brainer that the UK has to come out firmly behind this.""

Feargal Sharkey, the former Undertones frontman who currently chairs the DCMS-backed Live Music Forum, believes government ears are open to issues of copyright and that it could well be open to the music community’s point of view on the issue of term.

""The industry has an incredibly good argument right now,"" he says. In an era when margins are shrinking both in the physical world, where retail prices are falling, and in the digital world, where retailers - such as Apple - are increasingly dictating terms, the music industry’s ability to continue investing is in question, he says.

""Some 13% of annual revenues goes back into new artists - that’s a huge investment in research and development - and 85% to 90% of that will never generate a penny of profit. Extending the term will give the music industry a much better chance of recouping its investment.""

In other words, failure to extend the term - in the light of prevailing market conditions - could force some companies to scale down their investment.

It is not just about benefiting corporations, however. Sharkey cites Musicians Union data which indicates that 60% of all musicians make less than £10,000 a year. ""In that light, extending the term for sound recording may be a reasonable thing to do, to give some opportunity for creators to gain some benefit for what they have created,"" he says.

And, as an increasing number of artists gain control of their masters - as Sharkey and the rest of the Undertones did in the mid-Eighties - this argument becomes all the more potent.

There are plenty of other arguments for an extension in the term, too. ""50 years is really the international minimum - there are many other countries going towards a much higher level,"" says Moore. ""The EU is supposed to be strong on culture and yet it only has 50 year protection for producers of sound recordings.""

When the 50-year term was first established, many years ago, it was intended to reflect life expectancy and thus constitute a pension, says Moore. ""Life expectancy is longer now,"" she adds.

The arrival of rock’n’roll recordings into public domain also creates a more acute international rights issue, says Moore. ""If you have countries all around the world at 95 years and 80 years and 70 years and 50 in Europe, you have the potential for a quite substantial problem arising in infringement in the international environment.""

The comparable protection of authors - of life plus 70 years - further highlights the anomaly. """

"53","b0b6aacd69","This Compact Disc will self destruct in.......!","There is an interesting article on the BBC News website (Entertainment section) about Compact Discs and how they are not quite as durable as people have been led to believe. If you think compact discs will last forever or even 100 years or so then think again and read the article. Personally, I have a couple of old CDs in my own collection that have suffered from the so-called ""bronzing"" effect.

Interesting to note that the most vulnerable part of the CD is the side with the label on and not the underside as most people think.

The article makes for interesting reading highlighting the fact that compact discs are not quite the long live products that people have been led to believe.

I have reproduced the article below for ease of reference. You can also access it at the following address

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/music/3940669.stm

where you can also read other peoples comments on how the CDs in their own collections have faired. You can also leave your own message.

""Is music safe on compact disc?

By Tom Bishop

BBC News Online entertainment staff

Compact discs were sold as the durable alternative to vinyl - but anyone who opens the case of an ageing CD may be in for a nasty surprise.

Earlier this year, US web designer Dan Koster found 15% of his 2,000 CDs had begun to rot, and were unplayable and worthless as a result.

Holding his CDs up to the light, he said: ""I was shocked to see a constellation of pinpricks, little points where the light was coming through the aluminium layer.""

As we increasingly convert CD tracks for use on portable digital players and copy songs and photos onto CDs, there is renewed interest in the format's longevity. What causes CDs to deteriorate, and how wide is the problem?

Still vulnerable

Soon after compact discs came onto the market in 1983, owners realised that - while they were indeed more durable than vinyl or cassette tape - the CD was by no means indestructible.

Each CD comprises an aluminium layer which holds its data, sandwiched between polycarbonate and a protective lacquer.

The inlay booklet that came with your copy of the first big-selling CD, Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms, warned that the disc remained vulnerable to heat, cold, light, dust, fingerprints and scratches.

Stacking discs horizontally was bad for them, as was any Tomorrow's World stunt involving jam, drills or bulldozers. By obeying these rules, we were promised ""a lifetime of listening pleasure"".

To say they will last for 100 years simply isn't true

Jessica Ross,

Computing Which? editor

That claim has since been questioned by CD owners including Jessica Ross, editor of Consumer Association magazine Computing Which?

""I have several that are unplayable a few months after buying them,"" she said. ""To say they will last for 100 years simply isn't true.""

Yet manufacturers maintain that bad handling is the main cause of problems with compact discs.

""Most people believe the underside of the CD is its most vulnerable part, when in fact it is the side with the label on,"" said Roy Varley, managing director of CD manufacturer Spool Multi Media.

""A slight scratch on the label side can damage the metal and cause the CD to skip or become unreadable.""

However, this does not explain why careful CD owners have found discs in a worse condition than when they left them.

Eleven years ago thousands of compact discs in the UK became unplayable after they changed colour from silver to gold in a process known as ""bronzing"".

This was initially blamed on a reaction between the CD's lacquer and chemicals within the cardboard cases which housed them at the time.

But two months later, CD manufacturer PDO said all affected discs had been made in the late 1980s at its plant in Blackburn, Lancashire, which had used a silver coating on its discs instead of the standard gold.

Rusting effect

Spool Multi Media said while ""most CD manufacturers aim for high standards"", faults still occasionally develop.

""When the CD is made, protective lacquer is dropped onto each disc, which is spun to spread the lacquer to its outer edges,"" said Mr Varley.

""If this is not done properly, the lacquer may not cover the disc, enabling air to penetrate and oxidise the aluminium. Over time, this rusting effect can ruin the CD.""

Millions and millions of compact discs have been made and problems have only been found with an absolute minority

Jeannet Harpe, Philips communications manager

Record companies Warner Music, EMI, BMG, Sony and Universal declined to comment on the deterioration of compact discs.

Similarly, a spokesperson for CD manufacturer Sonopress would only say: ""We tend to distance ourselves from being linked with CD deterioration.""

But Philips, which co-developed the compact disc with Sony, said CD deterioration was an isolated problem.

""The reason for the huge success of the compact disc is its robustness, durability and quality,"" said communications manager Jeannet Harpe.

""Millions and millions of compact discs have been made and problems have only been found with an absolute minority of them. This can happen with any product.""

Digital duplicates

Philips and Sony list the specifications of audio CDs in a manual known as The Red Book, which all compact disc manufacturers are required to adhere to.

""There is no problem with those specifications,"" said Ms Harpe. ""If they are followed when a compact disc is made, it will last a lifetime.""

No matter how remote the threat, the possibility of losing treasured albums, singles or digital photos will inspire many to duplicate their digital information onto a computer hard drive or recordable compact disc as a precaution.

""But recording your own CDs is not an exact science because home technology is not as sophisticated as professional CD manufacture,"" said Mr Varley.

""Computers can also develop faults - no format is completely 100% reliable. With that in mind, the compact disc is still the best format there is."""

1. GLCD 5106 - The 1930s

The 1930s witnessed many advances in entertainment for the masses. Films were now talking, radio was making great strides in the home, and the electrical recording that had been fully developed as the 1920s drew to a close meant that records no longer sounded 'hissy' and 'tinny' - provided that you owned a reasonable gramophone on which to play them. Light music was thriving, not only through the afore-mentioned modern miracles, but also at the seaside, in public parks and in theatres throughout the land where ensembles, large and small, were in their hey-day. The record companies reflected this wide diversity of musical choice, and the recordings in this collection offer many contrasting styles. Today's restoration techniques are revealing just how far the art of sound recording had progressed by the 1930s. :D

2. GLCD 5107 - Charles Williams & The Queen's Hall Light Orchestra

During the 1940s and 1950s, the Chappell Recorded Music Library was the world's leading provider of quality background music. Radio and television signature tunes often had their origins in this library, and Chappell could call upon the talents of many of the finest composers working in light music. Much of it was performed by the legendary Queen's Hall Light Orchestra, and for the first few years it was Charles Williams who waved the baton. He also wrote a wide variety of works to cover the needs of films, radio and particularly wartime newsreels. But there was also plenty of other tuneful music committed to 78s, as this collection spanning the years 1942 to 1945 surely proves.

For more information including a track listing, please visit Guild's website/e-shop http://www.guildmusic.com where you can also listen to a couple of sound clips from each CD. On the Guild website, there are also full details of the artists/composers appearing on the CDs.

As with all the other CDs in this series, these two new CDs have been compiled by David Ades with audio restoration and remastering in the expert professional hands of Alan Bunting. It's no exaggeration to say that this series of Light Music CDs would not exist without the tireless dedication of these two gentlemen. We owe them our deepest gratitude.

Enough said. I'm placing my order immediately!"

German composer Erich Ferstl maybe unknown to a lot of people but he is definitely a talented, versatile and creative composer as well as having an ear for melody. All the tracks are instrumental played by a full string orchestra (NB the ""Monaco Strings"" is credited to most of the tracks).

All the tracks are melodic and very enjoyable. This is attractive beautiful light/easy listening melodic music. You certainly do not need to be a fan of soundtrack music to enjoy this CD. I really enjoyed this CD and am sure it would appeal to a lot of RFS members. Just listen to the sound clips on the Colosseum website.

One minor criticism apart from the short running time is that on a few tracks some surface noise is evident although this is not that bad and doesn't detract from the overall sound quality and enjoyability.

I bought my copy of the CD from www.amazon.de where it cost approx Euros 16 + postage and packing. You can also buy the CD direct from Colosseum and no doubt from other online sources on the Web.

Hopefully there will be another CD compilation of Mr Ferstl's music in the near future."

The following is the official press release from EMI:

""EMI Classics is proud to be releasing Harmony, the official classical album for the world’s most important sporting event, the 2004 Olympic Games which are being held in Athens this summer.

This release is one of three official albums all being produced by EMI Music to support the Games: Unity, the official pop album, PHOS, the official Greek album, and the classical album, Harmony. This compilation features some of EMI’s finest artists performing their best-loved classical and crossover music, including Vanessa Mae, Nigel Kennedy, Plácido Domingo and Maria Callas. There is a beautiful selection of music on this disc, with some of the most famous tunes from the classical and crossover repertoire. Maria Callas sings Qui Radames verra from Verdi’s opera Aida and it is this piece which will open the Games at the official ceremony in Athens. Also among them is Sarah Brightman singing Time to Say Goodbye, which caused such a storm when it was first released in the late nineties, Auld Lang Syne sung by Helmut Lotti and Happy Valley performed by Vanessa Mae, the piece which accompanied the celebrations around the arrival of the Olympic torch in Bejing this year. There are also some classical favourites: Handel’s Saraband of Levi’s advert fame, performed by British harpist Julia Thornton and the magical Pie Jesu sung by Charlotte Church. It also features a movement from the stunning new Mass, The Armed Man – A Mass for Peace, by British composer Karl Jenkins, whose popular compositions for Adiemus have featured in adverts around the world. This is also the first opportunity to hear the beautiful voices of EMI Classics’s newest signing, Libera, in Voca Mei. Finally, this album presents a new piece Olympic Dream, a homage to the Games, by the acclaimed crossover pianist, Maksim, whose album The Piano Player has gone Gold, Platinum and Double Platinum all over South-East Asia and in his home country of Croatia. Vangelis’s famous Chariots of Fire rounds things off in true Olympic style.

The sheer range of music and great variety of nationalities appearing on this album are in the true spirit of the Olympic Games – bringing together people from all over the world to strive for and celebrate the greatest of human achievement – this is the true definition of Harmony and the very essence of this album. In association with the release of Harmony, and the other two official Olympic albums, EMI Music will be making a donation to UNICEF’s work with young people, with a minimum of US $180,000 guaranteed for HIV/AIDS programmes in sub-Saharan Africa.""

For further information go to http://www.emiclassics.com/ where you can listen to three sound clips.

The CD is available worldwide from your local CD shop and from all the usual online CD retailers."

"72","79a9b53ff3","Cavaet Digital","I have suffered disappointment with digital media. I've had both audio digital and movie DVDs ""stutter,"" skip, ""wow,"" and still frame/stick in the grooves on me! Digital ""stutter"" is as it sounds. The audio or video medium will creep ahead in the case of a DVD movie or make a rather stuttering sound as it tries to progress. Very annoying. The rest of the digital woes are self-explanatory. And indeed, vinyl records will ""wow,""which is mainly attributed to the turntable motor or sometimes a record out of round. There's one more digital ill. It sounds like analog playback ""flutter."" In analog it's caused by slight variatiions in the turntable motor. This can occur in the recording or playback phase. However there's one remedy for CDs and DVDs from the aforementioned ills. That's the go over the surface of the disc with a cloth. However you should use one that's been washed many times. Of course, this method works on vinyl very well. But sometimes the digital product won't respond. Alas! If you think I'm a vinyl fan, you're RIGHT! :) I love to scour the Salvation Army and second-hand record shops for some real bargains in old vinyl. For instance, I found a ""Frank Chackesfield and His Orchestra"" used record in excellent shape. 1. GLCD 5108 - British Cinema & Theatre Orchestras

For centuries theatrical productions have often been accompanied by some kind of music, and by the time the 20th century dawned an orchestra 'pit' below the footlights was part of the stage furniture. When cinemas arrived on the scene, music was considered an essential ingredient to accompany the silent flickering images on screen: the music also helped to drown out the clutter of some noisy film projectors! During the period up to World War II large orchestras were expected in the top theatres, and even in cinemas the orchestras managed to survive for some years after the 'talkies' had arrived. Many cinemas also boasted a resident organist, occasionally alongside the orchestras. This CD reminds us of some of the top musicians and ensembles from that fascinating period.

2. GLCD 5109 - Light Music from the Silver Screen

From the earliest days music was considered essential to accompany silent films. The arrival of talking pictures merely transferred the music inside the cinema to the soundtrack, and a new generation of talented composers and arrangers emerged to fulfil the specialised requirements of the movie industry. Light music has usually been the preferred choice of producers and directors, and by the 1940s it is true to say that this genre had developed into its own art form. As well as writing new material closely allied to the action on screen, composers were often asked to make fresh arrangements of well-known melodies - especially in film musicals. The result has been that a vast amount of recorded material now exists, and it has the power to engender fond recognition of its origins many decades later. Also there are instances where the music has survived better than the film itself, as some of the fine examples in this collection will testify.

3. GLCD 5110 - Mantovani, By Special Request

Mantovani is now regarded as having fronted one of the greatest light concert orchestras of the last century. He achieved worldwide fame, and his music remains loved by millions. His LPs sold in vast quantities, and many have now been made available again on compact discs. However he still has thousands of loyal fans, and they are aware that there are many recordings that have failed to emerge from the dusty vaults of the recording companies - so far. Guild Music has responded to specific requests from Mantovani's admirers, and this collection contains the numbers that they have particularly wanted to acquire on CD. So it can honestly be stated that this compilation is exactly what the fans have demanded, because the choice is entirely theirs!"

Richard Hayman and His Orchestra return to Naxos this month in this reissue from Naxos International of an enchanting selection of tunes by Rodgers and Hammerstein, possibly the most successful composer-librettist pairing of the twentieth century.

Born in New York in 1902, pianist-composer and producer Richard Charles Rodgers left a legacy of achievement unparalleled in theatre history. After a successful collaboration with lyricist Lorenz Hart, Rodgers teamed up with librettist Oscar Hammerstein II. The result was Oklahoma!, a musical which broke away from the operetta tradition and won the Pulitzer Prize in the following year. In 1998 Rodgers and Hammerstein were placed by Time Magazine and CBS News among the top twenty most influential artists of the twentieth century."

"107","acbeb6f601","A time of sadness","Ever since I became a great enthusiast of the music of Percy Faith, and started collecting his music with the help of friends worldwide, the name of Robert Farnon was always mentioned as one of THE masters of the wonderful music we enjoy, ""popular music for orchestra."" In many respects, I have thought of them as equals - bringing rich orchestral sounds to radio and records, one in the US, one in the UK! Both of them knew a magic time where the orchestra reigned supreme over the radio waves and both went on to bring us many hours of wonderful music on records.

Percy Faith and Robert Farnon studied in Canada, Faith going to the United States for fame and fortune, and Robert Farnon to the UK. There can be little doubt that they are GIANTS in the wonderful musical world they created for us, and that the news of Robert Farnon's death is a reminder that these [i:acbeb6f601]giants[/i:acbeb6f601] of the light music world have left us no heirs with their musical capabilities; it is a changed world, not for the better, where large orchestras dominated by strings have essentially vanished - however, Faith and Farnon left us with their rich recorded legacies - and we will always be grateful for that.

My condolences go out to the family of Mr. Farnon, as well as to his very loyal enthusiasts who have maintained a wonderful Society over the years that celebrates his life and his music.

I am an arranger who adores Bob's work and eventually got up the courage to call him after admiring his work for years and longing to see his scores to unveil the magic of his beautiful writing. I could not have been prepared for the kindness I received. That phonecall was the beginning of a friendship that grew and grew, and I feel grateful to have the experience of knowing such a special human being. Bob talked me through various aspects of writing for strings that one day I will describe in more detail, in short, the effect it had was to have me write more true to my instinct and not hold back fearing outside elements like limited available rehearsal time and therefore the need to write 'easier' charts. He talked me through each interval for double stops and multiple stops. He once phoned me and said ""Any music questions?"" That day, I knew I was the luckiest guy in the world. Once I asked him if I could send him something from here (I wanted to show my appreciation for all his kindness). Bob told me he had no score paper. Long story short, I shipped some to him and afetr what seemed like only a week, he was well into writing a bassoon concerto, that as it turns out will be premiered by bassoonist Daniel Smith. Bob was proofreading the computer engraved score when we visited him. I am so happy that a man whose love for music never seemed to have waned continued to write up to his passing. Roger Roger recorded a tune that was released as a 45 called Dalilia. I belive that was used as a theme to a TV program in the UK. Can anyone tell me the real name of Dalilia, and the TV program. tks"

Can anyone confirm that the music was based on that written for the film Captain Hormblower? Does anyone know if the music was scored for brass band by RF or by an arranger? And does anyone know who titled it as ""Un (sic) Vie ..."" rather than ""Une Vie ...""?"

I believe that the title used on the 45 release in the UK was ""The Desperadoes"", and was used as the theme of a TV serial known as The Desparate People written by Francis Durbridge. Could anybody shed some light on the origins of this tune. I believe it may has been rereleased on a Chappell Nostalgic Themes LP.

thanks"

"119","0d0ab6dfa6",,"I had the pleasure of talking to Robert Farnon in Brantford Ontario at the Sandereson Center. The concert that evening was dedicated to Mr. Farnon. A huge orchestra played a wide selection of his music. There were several guests appearing at the concert including Skitch Henderson. The music that night was so beautiful. When I talked with Mr Farnon after the concert I referred to him as ""Bobby"" and told him how I heard him on the radio with the happy gang. He was a truly delightful man."

Thank you VERY much for this posting about Roger Roger’s ‘Dalilia’. My local radio station plays it a lot but I found it hard to quite get a fix on the pronounciation/spelling of the title. (I also had a problem with Roger Roger - until I found this website … and the penny dropped :D ).

I can’t tell you anything more about the tune as such - except to say it was featured on a CD released in Australia late last year - DOWN MEMORY LANE - Volume 11 (Warner Music). This 2CD set is still available as I’ve just bought a copy. It’s a compilation of mostly vocals from 60s artists but it does have a few instrumentals including; Roger Roger’s ‘Dalilia’, Jack Nitzsche’s The Lonely Surfer and The Megatrons’ Velvet Waters.

Keryn"

I have a question for light music experts that is probably too hard to answer as I can’t give much info … but here goes as this is something that has been nagging at me for years.

Sometime in the late 70s/early 80s I heard a wonderful piece of orchestral music but I never found out its title. Though the tune is different, there’s something about the strings arrangement and the fact it is a VERY melodic piece that reminds me very much of Norrie Paramor’s ‘Soul Coaxing’ - one of my very favourite tunes. I might be wrong, but my gut feeling is it really could be by Norrie Paramor and his orchestra. (…it’s probably older than the 1970s too I guess).

For any Australian members - though I’ve only heard it on the radio twice in many decades - it was also used as background music for a short public relations film put out by the National Capital Development Commission (NCDC) in Canberra. It was shown at their mini auditorium at Regatta Point, possibly in the early 80s. I remember sitting through the film 3 or 4 times just to hear the music.

I know this is hardly much to go on and there’s not a single note of the tune I can recall - but (based on my previous experiences) I know I will recognise it the minute I hear it again - I just need some direction on where to look! Hoping someone can help…

Regards,

Keryn"

"126","b8d2019fe5","Bobbie Farnon","As a boy in Toronto in 1952 I found myself billeted in a block of apartment buildings housing many young ex-soldiers and their wives--my Mom and Dad among them. Across the road from us was a young guy my age who was locally noted for several things. He was an extrordinary athlete for his age (10). His mother was extremely beautiful. He had no father. He was for a while a sort of hero for me and his mother was very kind. I thought it strange that he should be so accomplished and yet have no father. The two of them to my eye appeared like people from a slightly higher plane--he athletically gifted and his mother, beautiful. His name was Bobbie Farnon.

Bobbie Farnon became Bob Baird when his mother inevitably remarried and he continued to be an extremely gifted athlete and a very decent man. I am a musician and now know where his name came from but Bob junior never played a musical instrument as far as I know."
