Until just now, I never knew there was a name for this kind of music. Compositions of this type have always stuck out in my mind, a sound which I’m happy to now be able to identify as "light music". I must have begun committing melodies to memory at the youngest of ages (most notably Jack Beaver’s "Workaday World"), primarily due to the fact that so much of the television programming on at the time was prominently featuring light music tracks (without any mention of artists or composers in the credits of course). In particular, much of the cartoons from the late 1980’s and early-mid 1990’s of the US-based children’s network "Nickelodeon" regularly showcased what I now know to be light music, leading me to believe that there must be tens, perhaps hundreds of thousands more people in their early twenties such as myself who unknowingly possess a connection with this genre.
I look forward to learning more and bringing others into this very interesting fold. Thank you for your work on this site and your commitment to preserving the history and heritage of light music.
Best Regards,
-Danny

My Father Gerry Travers was one of the lead vocalists Of the Canadian band of the AEF, with Paul Carpenter, and Joanne Dallas. He always spoke so highly of Bob Farnon as a musical genius, and they still kept in touch until my father passed away in 2003. It is nice to read this biography of Bob Farnon to get a more detailed insight of his musical career. I still have my fathers original live BBC recordings of the Canada Show broadcasts. They are wax covered metal Lp size records, that play at 78 speed from the label out to the edge. In 2000 Cowtown Publications released these WW2 Canadian Band of the AEF recordings as well as others they had found on CD's.

Hi, I posted a question about a piece of music on your old forum before it was hacked. I notice it is still there but I never did receive a reply. I guess I didn't give anyone much to go on but it's been a while and maybe since then it might strike a chord with someone. Please read my old post - and if you have the answer I'd love to hear it.

Hello. In Jumping Bean Dateline June 2007 at the end is written "Jack Docherty thinks he knows the answer. He recently discovered that H.M. Farrar’s full name is Hubert Murgatroyd Farrar! " If this is the same person as my late father, his name was Henry (Harry) Murgatroyd Farrar. He wrote a lot of music for De Wolfe, London some of which is still played. If anyone has any infomation on my father they woulod care to share I would be delighted to receive it. Thank you and Best wishes John Farrar

I have a MS version of RF's Intermezzo for Harp and Strings which came out the collection of a now deceased BBC music producer. I have previously offered it to the RF Society but without response. It's available for anyone who wants it. I hate throwing away music!

Hello, Nice to have discovered this site. Whilst I compose and perform Piano music myself I find Copyright a great barrier in keeping many works by composers like Charles Williams, Bob Docker, Mai Jones etc. alive on Internet via MP3. To perform on a non profit making basis on sites like Soundclick seems a remote possibility in view of today's required royalties. Sad really.

I've been searching for a copy of Charles Williams' "The Winged Messenger". This piece was used extensively by NBC-TV for their program promos in the late 50s & early 60s. It was also used as the opening theme for two old time radio programs, "Doctor Six Gun" and "The Silver Eagle".
So please let me know. Reply here. Then I'll reply to you via email.

Thank you for such an interesting article on Tony Osborne. My mum Nancy worked for Tony and Joan in the 1960's when they lived in Bickenhall Mansions. I wonder if Tony remembers me - I was very young at the time and held him in great awe.

Cyril Stapleton was my fathers cousin I guess that makes him my second cousin. I remember my father speaking very highly of Cyril and how at one stage he was attempting to teach my father the violin. I remember meeting him once when I was very young and he was on a visit to Australia. My husband and I have often wondered where our own children get there musical talent clearly its in the family genes somewhere. Heres hoping they will be as famous as Cyril one day! It was wonderful to read the information on your web sight about him it was far more informative than dad's memories and great for our boys to know they have a famous musician in the family. Cheers Diana Kenyon.

Came across your site whilst searching for Peter Yorke and then read up on Johnny Gregory. My mother was Peter Yorke's copyist and Librarian and ran the B.Bramson Music Service working for most of the names and film makers of that era. I grew up with all the names on your site. If I read it correctly I take it that Johnny Gregory is still with us, if so does he have an email address as I would like to remind him of a favour he once did me in about '56. Great site, so much to catch up on. Trevor Butt

I would like to know the name of the piece by Robert Farnon that was used on the 1960s ABC-TV soap "Dark Shadows" as the original "Josette's Music Box". Was this piece ever available on a record or a CD? Does anyone where to purchase it? Thanks!

Hello from Germany. Thank You very much indeed for this wonderful and informative website about one of my favourite composer and arrangeur. I grow up with easy listening music from Robert Farnon, Ron Goodwin and many others british and american orchestras and singers (like Vera Lynn, Lena Horne). In my youth our german radio, the NWDR and later NDR in Hamburg was influenced very much by BBC radio. Later I very often listenes to BFBS in Germany. Thank you for both - the music an the website.

Hi I was lucky enough to have been born on the beautiful Island of Guernsey (now live in Alderney)and new Robert,Pat and his family very well. As you can imagine I am very saddened to hear of Pat's passing on 4th October, God bless her. I was also very luck to have been given a signed copy of 'Out of my Dreams' from Robert several years ago. Unfortunatly, the CD has become damaged and I am desperate to get hold of a new copy but as yet have been unscccesful. If anyone has a copy I would be very pleased to purchase it or pay for a copy to be copied, plus postage. The 'Great Man' is extreamly missed by us all in Guernsey but his wonderful laugh and magical music will linger on our Island shores until eternity. Kindest regards Janine
